Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association's (BGMEA) president Rubana Huq today said meeting the $50 billion readymade garment (RMG) export target by 2021 is not feasible.

Questioning the $50 billion export target, Rubana said, the World Trade Organization also dropped down the consumption target from 1.8 percent to 1.2 percent considering the current situation of global market.

"A target should be value addition, a target should be retention. Why just a number? Numbers only create trouble," she said at a workshop on supply chain resilience of the readymade garment sector.

There was more than six percent negative growth in the sector in the last five months. That means, we have reached a crisis point, she said. 

She further said, we should decide what we want, not only from RMG but from other industrial sectors as well.
