BNP accepts or not, Polls will be held under new EC: Anisul

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Friday said the new Election Commission (EC) will hold all the upcoming elections, including the general election in 2019, no matter whether BNP accepts it or not.

Pointing out BNP’s criticism, the minister said that the President has constituted the new Election Commission as per the Constitution and law. We all have to respect his choice.

There is no scope to create any controversy over the Election Commission.

Anisul Huq came up with these observations addressing a programme marking the inauguration of a mobile therapy van for the physically challenged people and distribution of wheelchairs for them at Debgram Pilot High School in Akhaura upazila in Brahmanbaria.

Mentioning that the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was not picked from the list of Awami League, Anisul said the President formed the search committee with renowned personalities after discussions with political parties. He constituted the new EC from the 10 names given by the search body.

Criticising the Abdul Aziz-led Election Commission formed during the BNP rule, he also said there is no need to take lesson from BNP on how to constitute an EC.
