SC upholds Nizami’s death penalty

The Supreme Court (SC) today has upheld death for condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami by rejecting his review plea against the death sentence.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha announced the verdict on Thursday.

Now, after the review against death dismissed, the government can initiate Niazami’s execution process. The final chance that he can avail is to beg for his life to the president.

Earlier on March 29, the Jamaat chief filed the review petition against the death penalty handed down to him for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for the Jamaat chief hours after the apex court released its full verdict on March 15.

On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War in 1971.
