Apan Jewellers chief Gulzar Ahmed gets bail over evading revenue and customs duties

The High Court on Tuesday pronounced anticipatory bail to Apan Jewellers owner Gulzar Ahmed and two other its officials - Dildar Ahmed Selim and Azad Ahmed in regard with the case filed against them for eluding revenue and customs duties under Money Laundering Prevention Act.

The bench of Justice Obaidul Hasan and Justice Krishna Debnath issued the order after the three accused surrendered in the court asking bail.

Another bench of the High Court Division comprising Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Salim directed the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed to regain the gold seized by National Board of Revenue from different Apan Jewelers shops.

The bench issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Gulzar Ahmed challenging validity of seizing the gold.

On June 8, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate filed five cases with Dhaka Customs House against the three owners of Apan Jewellers on charges of dodging customs duty on 15.13 maunds of gold confiscated from its branches.
