President holds talks with CPB over new EC

A delegation of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) today met President Abdul Hamid and proposed enacting a law as per the constitution to appoint the chief election commissioner and other commissioners.

The meeting took place following the President's initiatives to hold talks with political parties on constituting a new EC.

During the 60-minute meeting, the CPB placed a seven-point proposal over the formation of the next EC, President's press secretary Joynal Abedin told reporters after the meeting.

The proposals include keeping provision of 'select committee' in the law regarding formation of EC and financial freedom of the EC.

CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim led the nine-member delegation in the discussion held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

Mujahidul Islam Selim said the discussion initiative of the President with political parties is very important for democracy.

President Abdul Hamid said political parties are placing positive proposals during the discussion, which will help to form a strong EC.

Secretaries concerned to the President were present.

President Hamid initiated the formal talks with political parties over formation of the EC as the tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February next.

As part of the move he held first discussion with BNP on December 18 last year.
