No legal bar to BGMEA building demolition

The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday cancelled a petition asking review of its judgment that upheld a High Court (HC) order for destroying the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building.

The three-member bench led by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed the plea.

On November 8 last year, the SC released the full text of its verdict in which the apex court upheld the HC judgment that ordered BGMEA to destroy the 15-storey building which constructed in invalid way on the Begunbari canal and Hatirjheel Lake.

On the same date, the SC in its full verdict ordered BGMEA to demolish its building at its own cost.

The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) was also given directives to demolish the building. Otherwise, Rajuk will demolish it within 90 days of receiving the order.
